The Senate has established a seven-member committee to reconcile differing views on the proposed Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, a crucial step in reviewing Nigeria’s electoral framework.
The move follows over two hours of intensive deliberations behind closed doors, where senators examined key provisions and implications for future elections.
Headed by Senator Niyi Adegbomore, the committee includes Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam. They have three days to collate contributions and submit a report to the Senate. The bill’s consideration was postponed earlier to allow senators study the proposed changes.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed careful review, citing far-reaching consequences for electoral credibility. The bill’s passage is expected to strengthen electoral integrity, improve transparency, and enhance public trust.
The House of Representatives has already passed the bill, but the Senate’s review is crucial. The committee’s report will shape the Senate’s position on this key legislation ahead of upcoming elections.
Some proposed amendments include electronic transmission of results, stricter penalties for electoral offences, and expanded voter identification options. The committee’s tight deadline reflects the urgency of providing a credible and effective legal framework ahead of future elections.
