A Scholar’s Homecoming: Prof. Ogbo Takes the Reins at PAAU

Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman’s appointment as Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) marks a remarkable homecoming. The academic administrator’s journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and a passion for excellence. From his early days as a lecturer to his current role as the head of his alma mater, Prof. Ogbo’s trajectory is an inspiration to many.

Prof. Ogbo began his academic journey as a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State and subsequently as a lecturer at PAAU. He later became Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, where he implemented reforms that transformed the institution. His commitment to academic excellence, infrastructure development, and security earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s best polytechnic leaders.

Prof. Ogbo’s academic credentials are impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Science, Kano, a Master of Science in Political Science from the University of Ilorin, and a Ph.D in Political Economy and Development Studies from Nasarawa State University. He has published numerous articles and chapters in edited books, showcasing his expertise in political economy and development studies.

As Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ogbo has emphasised the importance of professionalism, collective responsibility, and quality assurance. He warns against counterproductive behaviours like rumour-mongering and truancy, stressing that they undermine academic excellence.

The Making of a Leader

Prof. Ogbo’s academic journey began at Bayero University, Kano, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He later obtained his Master of Science in Political Science from the University of Ilorin and his Ph.D in Political Economy and Development Studies from Nasarawa State University.

He began his academic career as a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State, before moving to PAAU as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, where he rose to become Head of Department. His leadership skills and academic expertise earned him recognition, paving the way for his appointment as Rector, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

In April 2020, he was appointed acting Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic by the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. His appointment was confirmed in February 2021. As Rector, Prof. Ogbo implemented reforms that transformed the institution. He introduced a 3-R mantra of “Repair, Reform, and Restore,” which improved academic standards, infrastructure, and security. Under his leadership, Kogi State Polytechnic has undergone reforms, including improvements in infrastructure, accreditation of new programs, strengthening of academic standards, eradication of cultism and other vices to the nearest minimum.

Vision for PAAU

In his inaugural congregation meeting as Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ogbo aims to drive innovation and transformation at PAAU. He emphasises professionalism, collective responsibility, quality assurance, and warns against counterproductive behaviours.

“At PAAU, we are committed to driving innovation, academic excellence, and transformation. We will prioritize professionalism, collective responsibility, and quality assurance, and we will not tolerate counterproductive behaviours that undermine our mission,” Prof. Ogbo said.

Prof. Ogbo’s appointment is a testament to his dedication to academic excellence. His journey from student to Vice Chancellor is an inspiration, and his commitment to PAAU’s mission is expected to propel the university to greater heights.

Balancing Academia and Politics: The Dual Life of Prof. Ogbo

Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman is a man of many hats. As a Scholar and Politician, he has navigated the worlds of academia and politics with ease, earning recognition and respect in both spheres.

His passion for politics led him to run a strategic campaign, especially in Ankpa Local Government Area, in support of former Governor Yahaya Bello for his relection for the second  term.

He has taken leadership roles, including serving as Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, proving his mettle as an astute administrator and trailblazer, leaving a success trail along the way to the admiration of those who were not happy with his romance with the Government of his Excellence, Governor Yahaya Bello then.

As a scholar, Prof. Ogbo has published numerous articles and chapters in edited books, showcasing his expertise in political economy and development studies. He has supervised countless students and contributed to curriculum development.

As a politician, Prof. Ogbo has been a vocal advocate for education and good governance. He has worked closely with government officials, including Governor Yahaya Bello, to drive reforms and improve infrastructure in Kogi State.

In one of his interviews with the media,Ogbo stressed that balancing academia and politics hasn’t been without challenges. He credits his strong work ethic and support system for helping him manage. “For me, it’s about prioritization and time management.” 

“I make time for my academic work, my students, and my political engagements. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it,” he added.

Prof. Ogbo’s dual life has earned him recognition as a leader and innovator. His commitment to academic excellence and public service has inspired many, and his legacy continues to grow. As he continues to make strides in both fields, it’s possible that he may eventually trade his academic robes for a more prominent role in politics – only time will tell.
