Nigeria Takes Step Towards Sustainable Cooling with Green Procurement Push

By Danjuma Amodu | February 17, 2026

The National Ozone Office, in collaboration with SRADev Nigeria, has hosted a capacity-building workshop on green procurement for sustainable cooling systems in Nigeria.

The workshop aimed to promote the adoption of energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies in the country’s cooling systems, with participants emphasizing the need for Nigeria to adopt green procurement practices to reduce energy consumption, promote sustainable development, and contribute to global efforts to address climate change.

“The success of green procurement depends on informed procurement officers, committed management, and strong inter-agency collaboration,” said the Director, National Ozone Office, Engr. Idris Abdullahi Isiaka.

“We urge all MDAs to integrate green procurement criteria into procurement planning and apply life-cycle cost analysis in cooling-related purchases.” He added.

Representatives from the Environmental Investigative Agency (EIA) UK and the African Development Bank (AfDB) also participated in the workshop, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change.

“Sustainable cooling is a cornerstone for climate action, and public procurement holds immense power to drive the transitions towards climate-friendly, energy-efficient cooling solutions,” said Mr. Tom Nickson from EIA UK.

“By prioritising green procurement, we can reduce energy consumption, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and set a powerful example for markets and communities around the world.”

Mr. Gerald Njume, Regional Principal Climate Change and Green Growth Officer, AfDB, stated that the bank is committed to supporting Nigeria in this drive, saying, “It is very important that the bank is key in terms of supporting Nigeria in this drive.”

Mr. Yusuf Kilani, Special Adviser to the President on Climate Matters, said the workshop came at the right time, adding, “From the Office of the President, efforts are underway to achieve zero environmental sustainability in all sectors.”

The workshop participants developed a guideline towards a National Action Plan (NAP) on Green Procurement, which will provide a framework for implementing green procurement practices in Nigeria’s public sector.

The National Ozone Office and SRADev Nigeria hosted a workshop on green procurement for sustainable cooling systems, aiming to promote energy-efficient technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nigeria’s cooling systems, largely inefficient and reliant on fossil fuels, contribute to environmental degradation and climate change.

The workshop brought together government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders to discuss green procurement’s role in achieving sustainable development, supported by EIA UK and AfDB.
