By Hassan Hussain

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Professor Thairu Yunusa, has called on the contractor handling the hospital’s Infectious Disease Centre to ensure timely completion of the project and deliver quality work in line with approved standards.

Professor Yunusa made the call during an assessment visit to monitor the progress of work at the centre in Abuja.

In a statement by the Head of Public Relations Unit of the hospital, Mallam Sani Suleiman, the CMD said the project aligns with the Federal Government’s directive on strengthening pandemic preparedness and response to emerging public health threats.

He explained that upon completion, the facility will be fully equipped to manage health emergencies, adding that the hospital has already mobilized well-trained medical personnel and other resources to tackle infectious diseases, including Ebola, Lassa fever, and other emerging threats.

Professor Yunusa also reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving the nation’s health sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The UATH Chief Medical Director noted that the hospital was designated as an Infectious Disease Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it successfully managed several cases under his leadership.

The statement maintained that the completion of the centre is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond effectively to future disease outbreaks.
