Former President of the Senate and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, has unveiled a nationwide leadership fellowship aimed at identifying and preparing a new generation of ethical and competent Nigerian leaders for careers in public service, enterprise, and academia.
The initiative, known as the Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme (PAM-P), has opened applications for its inaugural 2026 institutional cohort. Between 25 and 30 fellows will be selected through a competitive national process.
According to the organisers, the fellowship seeks to bridge what Senator Anyim describes as the longstanding gap between academic achievement and the practical demands of responsible leadership. He stressed that Nigeria’s greatest challenge is not the absence of talented young people but the lack of deliberate preparation for positions of responsibility.
Speaking on the launch of the programme, Anyim said leadership demands far more than talent and ambition.
“Talent alone is insufficient. Leadership is not acquired by chance — it is built through experience,” he said.
He added: “The purpose of PAM-P is to prepare young Nigerians before opportunity arrives. When responsibility comes, preparation should already be in place.”
Drawing from more than three decades in public service — including his tenure as President of the Senate and later Secretary to the Government of the Federation — Anyim said his experience convinced him that structured leadership development is one of the most strategic investments any nation can make.
“In public life, I have seen that talent alone does not prepare people for responsibility. Leadership requires judgement, discipline, respect for institutions, and the courage to serve beyond personal ambition. PAM-P is my modest contribution to preparing a new generation of Nigerians for responsible leadership,” he said.
The programme builds on an earlier mentorship initiative established by the former Senate President in 2019. It has now evolved into a fully institutionalised annual fellowship with a defined curriculum, a competitive selection process, and a long-term mentorship structure.
The fellowship will run for eight to twelve weeks in three phases. It will begin with an eight-week Online Leadership Academy where participants will receive instruction in ethical leadership, governance, entrepreneurship, strategic thinking, negotiation, career development, and institutional leadership.
Successful participants will then proceed to a residential leadership immersion in Abuja featuring practical simulations, peer learning, and direct engagement with experienced public and private sector leaders. This will be followed by a post-programme mentorship phase designed to provide continuous professional guidance and networking opportunities.
Participants will also be assigned to one of three specialised leadership pathways: Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development; Public and Private Sector Leadership; or Academia and Advanced Studies.
Applications are open to recent graduates, including National Youth Service Corps members, early-career professionals within five years of graduation, entrepreneurs, and individuals who have demonstrated leadership in civic, professional, or community settings.
Programme organisers said selection would be based primarily on leadership potential, ethical orientation, and commitment to disciplined personal development, rather than academic credentials alone.
“The Programme prioritises formation potential over polished credentials. A promising applicant from a modest background who has shown genuine leadership in their community is of greater interest than a well-credentialled candidate who has not,” the organisers said.
Unlike many leadership development initiatives, participation in PAM-P will be entirely free for successful applicants. The programme will cover transportation to Abuja, accommodation, feeding, and all training materials during the residential component.
Organisers said the fellowship is non-partisan and is designed solely to nurture principled leaders capable of strengthening Nigeria’s institutions and contributing to national development through ethical service.
Applications close on 20 July 2026, while the fellowship is scheduled to commence on 7 September 2026. Shortlisted candidates will undergo structured interviews before final selection.
The programme is coordinated through the Senator Anyim Pius Anyim Service Library Ltd/GTE, with implementation support from the Athena Institute of Business and Technology and academic and residential support from Baze University.
