Blasts Shake Maiduguri as Boko Haram Suspected of Planting IEDs

By Danjuma Amodu | March 16, 2026

Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, were thrown into shock on Monday evening following the deafening sounds of multiple explosions. Boko Haram terrorists are suspected to have planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in parts of the ancient town. The areas affected by the explosions include the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Monday Market Roundabout, and Elkanemi.

The first explosion was reportedly heard around 7pm, shortly after Muslims broke their fast. It is unclear if there were any casualties from the incident, which occurred hours after terrorists attacked a military location in Ajilari, an outskirt of Maiduguri, where they burnt the place and carted away a military patrol vehicle.

However, troops successfully repelled the attack, killing some of the terrorists, while many others fled the scene with bullet wounds.

More details are awaited.
