In Nigeria’s public service, certificates often gather dust while potential withers in the shadows. At Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, that narrative has just been rewritten.
What started as a routine interaction in the Exams and Records Unit has become a campus-wide talking point after the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Usman Salisu Ogbo, elevated a cleaner, Mrs. Eleojo Daniel, to an administrative position.
Mrs. Daniel, assigned to cleaning duties, had quietly taken on more. Diligently and without being prompted, she assisted with core administrative tasks, including transcript computation; a painstaking, high-stakes process that demands precision and trust.
When Prof. Ogbo heard this, he asked a simple question: What is your qualification?
Her simple answer: Sir, I have a Bachelor of Science degree.
It was a divine moment where chance met opportunity — a case of preparation meeting favour, perfectly curated for Mrs. Daniel.
For many leaders, it would have ended as a pat on the back. For Prof. Ogbo, it was a moment of decision. Recognising a clear mismatch between qualification and placement, and moved by her diligence and extra-mile spirit, he approved her immediate redeployment to the administrative cadre — a role aligned with what she laboured for through years of burning the midnight candle.
Eyewitnesses said the moment was emotional. Mrs. Daniel, overwhelmed, expressed profound gratitude for being seen, heard and given a second chance to live her trained career.
It was a classic case of Martin Luther King’s philosophy in action: she swept so well that heaven and earth had to pause.
REACTION TRAIL DECISION
The decision has triggered an outpouring of commendation from staff, students and political stakeholders, many of whom described it as a morale booster for the entire university workforce.
Alluding to Prof. Ogbo’s knack for discovering talent and turning potential into performance, Dr. Emmanuel Jacob, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics Sciences said:
“Thank you, Prof. You demonstrated this leadership quality countless times during your time as Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic. Leadership is truly in you, and I believe it is a gift from God. May God continue to strengthen and bless you.”
Renowned politician, Ikani Benjamin Okolo, former Chairman of Dekina Local Government and former member of the House of Representatives, said: “Thank you for dignifying the family of this lady by rewarding her with an appointment befitting her academic qualification. God bless and protect you, sir.”
Idoko Ojochenemi described it as “a display of commendable and innovative leadership capable of motivating the entire university workforce for maximum job performance. Thank you for your transformative strides. You are indeed a talented, transformative and innovative servant leader capable of driving speedy national development. A raiser of men shall be raised by God Himself.”
For many who know Mrs. Daniel, the promotion did not come as a surprise.
Ekeyi David said: “There is no day you come to that office and you won’t meet her. She is always around.”
Okpetu Immanuel Melody added: “Meeting this woman about a month ago confirmed what she is saying. Very dedicated and active, always in the office. Madam, may God bless you.”
Blessing Monday, who said she knew Mrs. Daniel from her days at the university store, noted: “Congratulations, Aunty Eleojo Daniel. Sincerely speaking, your dedication and hard work, which has now paid off, is second to none, right from when you worked in the store. May God bless our amiable VC for this great promotion. I am so happy for you, Ma.”
Iwodi Godwin Danjuma stated: “This is commendable, sir. PAAU will be great during your time and beyond. Your style of leadership right from Kogi State Polytechnic is worthy of emulation. God bless you and continue to increase you in all ramifications, sir.”
Isah Emmanuel Ojodunwene, who witnessed the moment, described it as emotional: “I was present at the event. In fact, it was so emotional. God showed up for her through Prof. Ogbo. Thank you, Prof, you are indeed God-sent.”
Aye Mercy, in an emotion-laden reaction, wrote: “Oh God, I don’t know when I shouted Hallelujah. God has really used you to touch so many lives, it’s no longer news. You are truly a light. Anywhere you land, good news follows. May Almighty God bless you and protect you and your family from evil eyes. Greater heights, sir.”
Also commending the gesture, Abdul Abdul said: “God bless you, Prof. Usman Ogbo, for making the woman feel valued and appreciated. This is rare in our leadership system. You have shown that there is absolutely a reward for a hardworking person. For putting a big smile on this woman, may Almighty Allah continue to guide you, honour you, protect you and give you the wisdom and grace to continue to pilot the affairs of the institution.”
In elevating Mrs. Daniel from holding a mop to desk, Prof. Ogbo has not just changed one woman’s story. He has sent a message to every junior staff that hard work has an address and sometimes, the leaders and the people are watching.
