By Danjuma Amodu | February 16, 2026

Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead a Federal Government delegation to Kano on Monday, following a devastating fire disaster at Singa Market. The delegation will convey President Bola Tinubu’s condolences to traders who lost billions of naira in the inferno.

The fire, which started on Saturday evening and raged into Sunday morning, caused extensive damage to the market, with property worth over N5bn destroyed and more than 1,000 businesses affected. Seven persons are missing, and four residential buildings housing small-scale businesses were completely razed.

The delegation will pledge financial assistance to support victims and aid Kano State in reopening the market. Members include Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Bernard Doro.

President Tinubu had earlier called Governor Abba Yusuf to express condolences and directed a comprehensive investigation into the recurrent market fires. The governor had urged the Federal Government to provide modern firefighting equipment, including air support.

The APC national chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, and former APC national chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje, visited the market to commiserate with traders. Also, the Southern Governors’ Forum and Northern States Governors’ Forum also expressed sympathy with the affected traders and families.
