Nigeria Police Force Suspends Enforcement Of Tinted Glass Permit Policy Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy nationwide, following a court order restraining the action.

The Nigeria Police Force’s decision to enforce the tinted glass permit policy was put on hold following a court order issued by a High Court in Orerokpe, Delta State, on December 17, 2025. The policy, which required motorists to obtain annual permits for tinted glasses, was initially set to take effect on January 2, 2026.

The decision was contained in a press release issued on 1 January 2026 by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, and made available to the media in Abuja.

The statement disclosed that the Police had earlier announced on 15 December 2025 to resume the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy with effect from 2 January 2026 aimed to strengthen public safety and internal security.

The controversy surrounding the policy began when the police announced plans to resume enforcement in January 2026, citing rising security risks and the use of vehicles with unauthorized tinted glass in crimes. However, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other stakeholders raised concerns about harassment, extortion, and civil rights violations by police officers

“Subsequent to this announcement, the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order of court in Suit No. HOR FHR M 31 2025, issued on 17th December 2025, restraining the Force from proceeding with the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or the vacation of the order,” the statement said.

However, the Police said it has entered appearance in the matter and taken steps to challenge the order in line with constitutional provisions and respect for judicial authority. The Police raised preliminary objections and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order,” the statement added..

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, affirms that the Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while discharging its primary mandate of protecting lives and property, the statement said.

Accordingly, and strictly in compliance with the subsisting court order, “the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.”

The Police assured members of the public that further updates would be communicated after the court’s determination, in the interest of public order and national security.

The NBA had previously filed a suit against the police, arguing that the policy was unlawful and violated Nigerians’ fundamental rights. The court order restrained the police from enforcing the policy pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or the vacation of the order.

The court has adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.
