The Deputy National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and Imo State ALGON Chairman, Honourable Engineer Ikenna Toni Adikibe, has described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He said the spirit of the historic 1993 presidential election remains a lasting symbol of unity, sacrifice, and the people’s determination for credible governance.
In a statement marking the 32nd anniversary of June 12, the Imo State ALGON Chairman said the day represents more than a mere event in the nation’s political calendar, but an enduring memory that continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic values.
Honourable Adikibe recalled that on June 12, 1993, Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional divides came together to cast their votes in what he described as the freest and fairest election in the country’s history.
He said the overwhelming support for the late Chief Moshood Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa demonstrated Nigerians’ preference for competence, unity, and national interest above sectional sentiments.
The ALGON Deputy National President noted that although the outcome of the election was annulled, the ideals and aspirations behind the exercise remained alive, serving as a foundation for the continuous struggle for credible electoral processes and democratic development.
While congratulating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the occasion, Honourable Adikibe also commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for what he described as remarkable achievements in governance since assuming office in January 2020.
He listed programmes and projects including the Orashi development initiative, Imo Empowerment Programme, Skill-Up Imo, digital economy drive, road infrastructure development, public sector reforms, and the Shared Prosperity Agenda as key milestones of the administration.
According to him, Governor Uzodimma’s focus on recovery, reconstruction, and rebuilding has transformed the state’s development outlook and restored confidence in public governance.
The ALGON leader further stated that democracy has continued to thrive at the grassroots level in Imo State, with the 27 local government areas enjoying greater autonomy and support under the present administration.
“As Chairman of ALGON in Imo State, we are proud to be associated with the vision and achievements of His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma. He has kept Imo firmly on the map of performing states in Nigeria.”
