The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing ecological challenges in Oyo State and across Nigeria, with a particular focus on climate‑change impacts, environmental degradation, flooding, erosion, desertification and related hazards.
This was contained in a press release issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.
The assurance came from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, when the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and a delegation of dignitaries visited him in Abuja on Thursday.
Senator Akume congratulated Oba Ladoja on his ascension to the throne and pledged that the Tinubu‑led administration would prioritise “the perennial ecological challenges facing parts of Oyo State,” adding that tackling such issues remains a national priority.
Earlier, Oba Ladoja explained that the purpose of his visit was to appeal for federal assistance in finding a lasting solution to the ecological problems that have caused “untold hardship” for residents of affected areas, particularly from recurring flooding.
He was accompanied by Senators AbdulFatai Buhari and Sharafadeen Alli, Alhaji Chief Ademola Alli, Prince Ade Adekanbi, Hon. Nureni Adisa and other high‑ranking officials.
The meeting underscores the Federal Government’s ongoing engagement with traditional rulers and state stakeholders to coordinate environmental interventions and deliver sustainable relief to vulnerable communities.
Oyo State has experienced severe flooding and erosion in recent years, with several local government areas reporting property loss, displacement and agricultural damage. The Federal Government’s ecological intervention programme, overseen by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, aims to deploy technical expertise, funding and infrastructure to mitigate such hazards and build climate resilience across the country.
