Military Submits Coup Plot Investigation Report to President Tinubu Amid Concerns Over Detained Officers’ Health

By Danjuma Amodu | January 26, 2026

The Nigerian military has submitted its investigation report on the alleged coup plot to President Bola Tinubu, confirming claims of an attempt to undermine the government.

The report, compiled by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), implicates 16 detained military officers, including a Brigadier-General, and recommends disciplinary measures.

The officers, arrested in October 2025, were initially said to be detained for indiscipline and breach of service regulations. However, sources indicate the investigation found evidence of a plot, contradicting earlier denials by the Defence Headquarters.

According to a Defence Headquarters source, the investigation concluded that there was indeed an attempt by some of the detained officers to undermine the government. The officers were indicted in the report and are expected to face disciplinary measures once President Tinubu reviews and approves the recommendations.

The detained officers include a Brigadier-General, a Colonel, four Lieutenant Colonels, five Majors, two Captains, a Lieutenant, a naval Lieutenant Commander, and an Air Force Squadron Leader. Among those named is Brigadier-General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, an infantry officer and member of Regular Course 44 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), who investigators suspect to be the leader of the alleged plot.

Concerns have emerged over the health and welfare of the detained officers, with a pro-democracy group, the Concerned Pro-Democratic Activists of Nigeria, appealing to President Tinubu and the Federal Government to intervene. The group has urged the authorities to either release the officers if there is no case against them or subject them to proper legal proceedings.

President Tinubu is expected to review the report and decide on the next steps, including potential court-martial or administrative sanctions. The military and the Presidency are yet to officially disclose the full contents of the report or announce the next steps.
