Strategic regulators and stakeholders have expressed satisfaction with the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project’s (HYPREP) progress in implementing UNEP recommendations in Ogoni land.
The stakeholders commended HYPREP’s efficiency, transparency, and commitment to collaboration at a quarterly review meeting in Port Harcourt.
HYPREP has achieved significant milestones, including land and shoreline remediation, mangrove restoration, and provision of potable water. The project has also supported sustainable livelihood programmes, donated ambulances to health facilities, and constructed a
Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration as well as the ongoing power project.
According to them, their independent field reports have shown proofs of HYPREP presence even beyond its Mandates.
Representatives from regulatory agencies, including the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and host of other stakeholders, praised HYPREP’s work, citing independent field reports that show the project is exceeding expectations.
The stakeholders assured HYPREP of continued support and suggested sustaining the quarterly review meetings to ensure effective collaboration. Professor Iyenemi Kakulu from Rivers State University said HYPREP is scoring good grades above average.
HYPREP’s Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, represented by Prof Damian-Paul Aguiyi, Director of Technical Services, reiterated the project’s commitment to best practice in waste management and called for adequate logistics support from regulators. He highlighted the project’s focus on UNEP recommendations, including remediation, mangrove restoration, and provision of potable water.
He commended the regulators and asset owners for their cooperation with the project and for making themselves available for fieldwork and the regular review meetings.
The PC further highlighted the status of the project, the successes achieved across all thematic areas, and assured that HYPREP will soon complete most of the ongoing projects and roll out others. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to review the progress of the Ogoni Cleanup, ensure quality control, and foster effective collaboration.
The quarterly review meeting demonstrated HYPREP’s commitment to transparency, partnership, and accountability, key to effective project delivery.
