Nigeria’s Telecoms Sector Attracts $1bn Investment, Boosts Network Expansion

By Danjuma Amodu | February 1, 2026

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector has secured over $1 billion in capital investment, driving the deployment of 2,850 new network sites nationwide. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced the investment, which has improved service quality and expanded critical infrastructure.

The NCC’s quarterly Network Performance Reports, developed with Ookla, show marked improvements in median download speeds, video Quality of Experience, and 4G LTE coverage. The reports measure network performance across urban centres, rural communities, highways, and 5G zones.

NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida attributed the progress to strategic investments and targeted regulatory interventions.”These reports enable us to track progress, identify gaps, and guide interventions,” he said.

The investment reflects confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy and is expected to support financial inclusion, digital participation, and economic growth. The NCC’s data-driven approach aims to ensure transparent regulation, predictable policy environment, and accountability for performance benchmarks.

The NCC’s efforts to promote transparency and accountability in the telecoms sector have been instrumental in attracting investment and driving growth.

Dr. Maida emphasized that the commission will continue to work with operators to ensure that the benefits of the investment are felt across the country.

The expansion of network infrastructure is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s economy, enabling more Nigerians to access digital services, participate in the digital economy, and contribute to the country’s growth.

The NCC’s report highlights the importance of continued investment in the sector to meet the growing demand for data and digital services. With the right policies and regulatory framework in place, Nigeria’s telecoms sector is poised for further growth and development.
