The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has received a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) of GIZ, aimed at reinforcing ongoing collaboration and exploring new areas of partnership in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
The visit, which took place on Monday, was led by the Head of Component, Sustainable Energy Planning and Access under NESP, Mr. Milos Karic. NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, expressed appreciation for GIZ’s sustained support and collaboration with the Commission, citing the partnership’s role in producing one of Africa’s best mini-grid regulations.
The partnership has enabled off-grid electrification and expanded access to electricity, and Dr. Oseni called for continued collaboration to strengthen regulatory frameworks and support the transformation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The GIZ team expressed readiness to explore new areas of collaboration, highlighting joint initiatives such as work on the Net-Billing Regulations and stakeholder workshops focused on curbing vandalism of power infrastructure.
The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between NERC and GIZ, underscoring a shared commitment to deepening regulatory innovation, enhancing electricity access, and strengthening the sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector.
The GIZ team also noted that they are currently working with some Distribution Companies (DisCos) on embedded generation initiatives aimed at improving reliability and expanding supply within franchise areas.
This collaboration is expected to enhance the overall performance of the power sector and contribute to Nigeria’s economic development. The visit by the GIZ delegation underscores the importance of partnerships in driving progress in Nigeria’s power sector. NERC and GIZ have been working together to address key challenges facing the sector, including infrastructure vandalism and limited access to electricity.
Dr. Oseni expressed optimism that the continued collaboration would yield positive outcomes for the sector, including improved regulatory frameworks, increased investment, and better services for consumers. The NERC chairman also commended GIZ for their technical support and expertise in helping Nigeria develop its power sector.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from both parties to continue working together to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector and to drive progress in the country’s electricity industry.
