The Fallout: Mirabel’s Fabricated Rape Claim Sparks Debate

Mirabel, an 18-year-old TikToker, has admitted to fabricating a rape claim that sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice. She initially alleged she was raped and injured with a blade in her home but later confessed to Martins Vicent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), that the story was false.

The Ogun State Police Command is set to prosecute Mirabel for making a false rape claim, citing concerns about undermining the credibility of real victims and hindering justice. Mirabel, an orphan, struggles with mental health issues, including panic attacks, self-harm, and substance abuse. VDM has pleaded for forgiveness, emphasizing Mirabel’s need for help and support.

The incident has sparked debate on social media, with some calling for harsh punishment and others advocating for Mirabel’s rehabilitation. Authorities emphasize the need for thorough investigations and due process.

Mirabel’s False Rape Claim: A Timeline

February 15: Mirabel posts a video claiming she was raped in her residence.
February 16-18:The video goes viral, sparking outrage and calls for justice. Simi, a famous singer and other influencers rally behind her, and she receives donations.
February 19: Investigations reveal inconsistencies in Mirabel’s story.
February 20: Mirabel admits to making up the story in a recorded phone call with VDM.
February 21: Mirabel is taken into police custody for making false accusations.

Josephine Effah-Chukwuma and Lola Adeniyi, head of the Lagos State Domestic Violence Response Team, condemn Mirabel’s actions, citing the harm caused to real rape victims. Oluseyi Babaseyi, Ogun State Police spokesperson, confirms Mirabel is in custody but declines to comment on potential charges.

Inibehe Effiong, a human rights lawyer, states Mirabel may face charges under Section 59 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act.

Omenazu Jackson, Chancellor of the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights, calls Mirabel’s actions “a criminal offence and a social crime”.
