The All Progressives Congress (APC) has retained the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship, as incumbent Christopher Maikalangu was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes, out of 62,861 valid votes cast, in the keenly contested election.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed with 3,398 votes. A total of 2,336 votes were rejected, with 65,676 voters accredited from 837,338 registered voters in the council.
APC collation agent Gambo Babale hailed the process as “transparent and credible”, citing the party’s win of two councillorship seats in Karu and Karishi wards as evidence.
“The result signals the APC’s readiness for the 2027 general elections,” Babale said.
The election was marked by the presence of party agents from various parties, including ADC, APGA, YPP, and NNPP, who signed the result sheets at the collation centre. YPP ward collation agent Abdullahi Ibrahim commended the conduct of the exercise and congratulated the winner.
An electorate, Habu Haruna, attributes the APC’s landslide victory to the PDP candidate’s withdrawal. Hon. Zadna Dantani, the PDP candidate for AMAC chairmanship, stepped down and endorsed APC’s Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, citing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s intervention. Dantani’s withdrawal letter to INEC stated his decision was voluntary, made after consulting family and stakeholders.
