By Danjuma Amodu | February 22, 2026

James Milner has set a new record of 654 Premier League appearances, surpassing Gareth Barry’s tally, as he started for Brighton in their 2-0 win at Brentford on Saturday.

The 40-year-old midfielder, who broke into the Leeds team as a 16-year-old, has qenjoyed a glittering career with spells at Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool, winning three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League.

Milner attributes his longevity to his drive and hunger, saying, “It’s the drive and hunger. You want to be the best every day, whether it’s game or training.” He expressed frustration at times this season due to limited playing time but remains adamant about his ability, stating.

“I’ve been a bit frustrated this year, maybe not getting the minutes, but it’s a fine balance because, of course, we have to develop players as well and we want to win.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler praised Milner’s desire and professionalism, saying:

“He’s a role model on the pitch and beside the pitch… He has such great discipline and effort every day, and he is never satisfied.” Milner could extend his playing career beyond this season, saying, “Who knows, things change quickly in football… I’ll keep pushing. Let’s see where that takes us.”
