Empowering the Next Generation: Climate Education Takes Root in Abuja Schools

By Danjuma Amodu | March 4, 2026

A major climate education initiative was launched in Abuja, aimed at strengthening environmental awareness across schools in the Federal Capital Territory. The programme, a collaboration between the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, the Society for Planet and Prosperity and Secondary Education Board (SEB), Abuja focuses on equipping teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to educate students about climate change and environmental sustainability.

The training, which began with 40 teachers from schools within the Abuja Municipal Area Council, kick-started the pilot programme held at Government Secondary School Tudun-Wada, Wuse, and will be extended to other parts of the FCT, including Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kwali, Kuje, and Abaji. Vice Principal Academics, Mr Eba Elima Williams, welcomed the programme, noting that it would promote environmental awareness among students.

The teachers are being trained using a comprehensive Climate Education Manual developed by the Society, covering key climate change concepts and practical approaches for classrooms and climate clubs. “We are not leaving them after this training,” assured Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, President of the Society for Planet and Prosperity, emphasising that support will be ongoing with regular visits to schools.

“By empowering teachers and students, we can create a more sustainable future for Nigeria,” Professor Okereke affirmed.

Director Science, Technology and Mathematics, SEB, Mr Abdullahi Muse Zakir, highlighted the impact of climate change on Nigeria, citing rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, flooding, and environmental degradation. He stressed that climate education must move from theory to practical, solution-driven learning to build resilience.

Teachers at the workshop expressed enthusiasm, pledging to champion climate advocacy at the grassroots. Eze Uzomaka Comfort, an environmental manager and patron of the Eco Club at Government Model Secondary School, Jikwoyi, Abuja, explained the science behind flooding, linking rising temperatures to increased evaporation and condensation cycles. “It’s crucial that we educate our students about the causes and effects of climate change, so they can become agents of change,” she added.

Dr. Isah Philp Abdulmalik, a teacher from Government Secondary School Idu-Karimo, FCT, pledged to establish a climate club in his school to raise awareness about climate action and environmental responsibility. “I plan to inspire my students to take action and make a difference in their communities,” he said.

Ms. Faith Kaminus, Director of Operations at Ebaidebheki Initiative, urged teachers to inspire learners to explore innovative climate solutions and serve as sustainability role models in their communities.

The initiative is expected to deepen climate awareness among young people and empower the next generation to take informed action toward environmental sustainability. The Society for Planet and Prosperity plans to expand the programme to other parts of Nigeria, leveraging partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector organisations.

The climate education manual covers topics such as climate science, sustainable practices, and climate resilience, providing teachers with the tools they need to teach climate-related issues effectively. As Nigeria continues to grapple with climate change impacts, initiatives like this offer hope. By empowering young people with knowledge, skills, and values, the programme is sowing seeds for a more sustainable future.

The programme’s focus on practical solutions and community engagement has resonated with educators and students, with many expressing optimism about positive change.
