Sultan Calls for Shawwal Crescent Sighting as FG Declares Public Holidays for Eid-el-Fitr

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the Shawwal crescent, signaling the end of Ramadan and start of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

In a statement by the Sultanate Council, Muslims are urged to look out for the new moon on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH.

Those who sight the crescent should report through traditional channels or dedicated phone lines to the Sultan’s office.

The confirmed sighting will mark the end of Ramadan fasting and the beginning of Eid-el-Fitr, with the Sultan making an official announcement upon verification.

FG Declares Public Holidays
In a related development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, 19 March, and Friday, 20 March 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, signifying the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan, urging them to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice.

Message to Nigerians
The Minister called on all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the country’s peace, unity, and prosperity, and encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend kindness to the less privileged.

The Federal Government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians.
