Nigeria and Türkiye Join Forces to Boost Family Welfare: Landmark Deal Paves Way for Transformative Social Development

In a significant stride towards strengthening family cohesion and social welfare, Nigeria and Turkiye have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive social development and family welfare.

The MoU, signed on January 27, 2026, in Ankara, Turkiye, as contained in a press statement by Head, Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Lawan Danbazau, aims to strengthen families, empower women, protect children, and promote inclusion of vulnerable groups.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said the MoU is the culmination of a year-long engagement and aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to working “faster and smarter” to reach a target of positively impacting 50 million citizens by 2030.

The partnership, according to her, will facilitate Nigeria’s first National Action Plan on Families, promote entrepreneurship, and establish mentoring mechanisms.

She reiterated that the deal is also aimed at empowering women’s entrepreneurial spirit, strengthening their socio-economic status, and establishing mentoring mechanisms to foster solidarity.

The agreement is part of President Tinubu’s official state visit to Turkiye, highlighting strong ties between the nations and addressing pressing social issues affecting Nigerian families.

She stressed the importance of protecting children by developing holistic protection systems and early intervention mechanisms to prevent neglect and abuse. Also, the inclusion of vulnerable groups for full social participation for persons with disabilities and promoting “active ageing” for senior citizens.

Speaking further, the Minister said the MoU is a sacred pact to prioritize the family as the engine of national prosperity, adding that both nations will immediately begin exchanging experts and best practices to ensure these social protections deliver tangible results for every household.

The MoU between Nigeria and Turkiye aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in social development and family welfare. This partnership is part of Nigeria’s efforts to address social issues and improve the well-being of its citizens.

The agreement aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, targeting significant social and economic improvements for Nigerians.

It will also build on existing diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Turkiye. Both countries have enjoyed strong relations, with cooperation in areas like trade, education, and security.

This social development partnership is expected to further strengthen Nigeria-Turkiye relations.
