Charges Experts to Drive Evidence-Based Decisions as Immunization Costs Rise

By Hassan Hussain | 1 April 2026

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr. Muyi Aina, has underscored the critical role of scientific experts in shaping Nigeria’s immunization policies amid rising costs and persistent coverage challenges.

Speaking in Abuja at a two-day capacity-building workshop for members of the Nigerian Immunization Technical Advisory Group, NGI-TAG, Dr. Aina described the forum as a vital platform “where science meets policy,” noting that experts serve as the “engine room” for evidence-based decisions guiding the country’s vaccination programmes.

He said Nigeria’s immunization efforts, including routine vaccination and the polio eradication initiative, have recorded notable progress over the years, particularly in strengthening systems and expanding coverage. However, he acknowledged that growth has slowed in some areas, creating a gap between increased investment and actual immunization outcomes.

Dr. Aina explained that the cost of vaccinating Nigerian children is rising rapidly due to population growth, expanded reach to previously underserved communities, and the introduction of newer, more expensive vaccines driven by scientific advancements.

“This makes the role of experts even more crucial in identifying the reasons behind the disconnect between funding and coverage, and in guiding sustainable, evidence-based solutions,” he said.

The NPHCDA boss revealed that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to boost domestic financing for immunization, reduce reliance on external support, and ensure timely release of funds to prevent vaccine stock-outs.

Strategies under consideration include strengthening allocations under the deepening partnerships such as agreements with the United States Government, and encouraging greater financial commitment from state governments.

Dr. Aina also highlighted ongoing deliberations on vaccine choices and cost-efficiency measures, including possible adjustments to pneumococcal, HPV, and measles-rubella vaccines. He stressed the need to balance scientific evidence with economic realities.

“Decisions must not be based on economics alone, but on a careful balance of science and cost-effectiveness to ensure long-term sustainability,” he said.

He assured stakeholders that the agency is committed to avoiding uninformed decisions, emphasizing that expert input will guide all major policy directions. He commended participants for their service to the nation, describing their contributions as vital to the health of present and future generations.

In his goodwill message, Senior Epidemiologist Dr. Hadley Ikwe called for sustained collaboration and bold, practical action to strengthen immunization programmes in Nigeria.

He noted that the opportunities ahead demand not only technical excellence but also strong partnerships and a shared commitment to impact. Deliberations at the workshop, he added, are expected to generate practical recommendations to improve implementation.

Dr. Ikwe said strengthening systems, improving surveillance and data use, advancing service delivery, and fostering innovation are critical to reaching every community.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the

and Prevention to continue supporting government-led priorities in Nigeria and across the region.

“Our goal remains to build resilient and efficient immunization programmes that will contribute to a healthier population and stronger communities,” he said.

Dr. Ikwe encouraged participants to maintain open dialogue and collaboration throughout the workshop, expressing confidence that the outcomes will move the country closer to its public health goals.
