The National Democratic Congress, NDC, says it is working to “rescue Nigeria from the misgovernance of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,” its national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, declared on Friday.
Dickson spoke after the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, paid him a visit in Abuja. The two leaders proceeded into a closed-door meeting that lasted about three hours.
In a post on his Facebook page, Dickson said the NDC remains committed to the “New Nigeria Project.”
“In the course of that meeting, we reviewed the activities of our party and discussed a few recent issues that have been a source of concern to all sides, and we amicably resolved all the issues,” he wrote.
“We have always been on the same page on the bigger picture, i.e., winning the elections for all candidates of our party and rescuing Nigeria from the misgovernance of the APC-led government.”
The lawmaker noted that a few issues of concern were addressed at the closed-door meeting, adding that they had been amicably resolved.
“However, a few issues have arisen, and we have agreed on how to handle them moving forward,” he said.
“I want to use this opportunity again to call on all members of our party to stop the bickering and name-calling and focus on the bigger picture.
“Both His Excellency Peter Obi and I, as well as other leaders and stakeholders of our party, will continue to consult and engage with one another to address and resolve concerns, strengthen the unity and cohesion of our party, and ensure that we remain focused on our shared mission of rescuing Nigeria and building a better future for all,” he concluded.
He added: “I just received my brother, colleague, and partner in the New Nigerian Project, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, our presidential candidate, who, together with some distinguished leaders of our party, held a closed-door meeting which lasted about three hours.”
Background
The NDC was formed as an alternative political platform ahead of the 2023 elections, drawing support from disaffected members of the PDP and other parties. Senator Seriake Dickson, former Bayelsa governor and current senator, has positioned himself as one of the party’s key national leaders. Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform, has been associated with the NDC’s “New Nigeria Project” as the coalition pushes for a united opposition front ahead of future polls.
