FCT Decides: Incumbent APC’s Umar Abdullahi Abubakar Wins Re-Election Bid in Abaji Area Council

By Danjuma Amodu | February 22, 2026

Umar Abdullahi Abubakar, the incumbent chairman of Abaji Area Council, has won yesterday’s chairmanship election, securing 15,535 votes. Representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar defeated his closest rival, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate, who polled 5,357 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate came third with 4,547 votes, followed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 53 votes and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 37 votes. INEC Presiding Officer Usman declared Abubakar the winner, citing he met the required legal standards.

Abubakar, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2022, switched to APC last year and contested the election on the APC platform.

His administration has been credited with modest road rehabilitation projects and community-based initiatives, though critics argue that Abaji still faces significant development challenges.

The declaration comes less than 24 hours after voting concluded on February 21, 2026, across all six FCT area councils, including Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.
