The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has commended journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their role in informing the public and contributing to national development.
Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Congress in Abuja, Disu described his relationship with the media as one built on mutual respect and professionalism.
“The police and media partnership is crucial to enhancing public trust and improving security communication,” Disu said, urging stronger collaboration between the two entities.
He emphasised that journalists should be treated with respect, adding that they play a critical role in society.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” he added
In response, NUJ FCT Council Chairperson, Comrade Grace Ike, congratulated Disu on his appointment, describing the new IaGP as a long-standing ally of the press.
She expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of the council’s readiness to collaborate with the police in reporting security matters objectively.

She used the opportunity to extend the Council’s invitation to the Police Chief as a special guest to the Council’s 2026 Press Week celebration and reaffirmed the NUJ FCT Council’s commitment to promoting responsible journalism and supporting security and governance initiatives in the territory.
Disu urged police officers and journalists to conduct themselves responsibly, noting that good conduct leaves lasting impressions.
Ike described Disu as a “longstanding friend of the press” and expressed confidence in his leadership. The event highlighted the importance of a healthy police-media relationship in promoting public trust and security.
