June 12: Democracy Remains Nigeria’s Surest Path To Unity, Progress, Says Fubara

By Kizito Ozoemena

PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has described democracy as Nigeria’s most reliable pathway to national unity, development, and prosperity, urging citizens to remain committed to the ideals that have sustained the country’s democratic journey over the past three decades.

In a message marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Fubara said June 12 stands as a powerful symbol of the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for freedom, justice, and representative governance.

The governor paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, as well as his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

“June 12 is a reminder that democratic governance was achieved through courage, resilience, and the determination of citizens who insisted that political power must ultimately rest with the people.”
— Gov. Siminalayi Fubara

According to him, the significance of June 12 extends beyond its historical importance. It serves as a reminder that democratic governance was achieved through courage, resilience, and the determination of citizens who insisted that political power must ultimately rest with the people.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic evolution over the last 33 years, Fubara acknowledged that the nation has faced numerous challenges. He noted, however, that the strength of its institutions and the resolve of its people have enabled democracy to endure.

He said the freedom to express differing views, engage in public debate, and elect leaders through peaceful electoral processes remains one of the country’s most important achievements.

DEMOCRACY AND NATIONAL DIVERSITY
The governor also emphasized the role of democracy in managing Nigeria’s ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity. He argued that the nation’s differences should be viewed as a source of strength rather than division.

He maintained that democratic governance creates opportunities for inclusion, consensus-building, and national cohesion while providing a platform for sustainable development and shared prosperity.

Fubara commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for pursuing policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly initiatives aimed at economic recovery, improved security, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to collaborate with the federal government in implementing programmes that promote infrastructure development, job creation, quality healthcare, education, security, and good governance.

Calling on Nigerians to use Democracy Day as an opportunity for reflection, the governor urged citizens across political, ethnic, and religious divides to renew their dedication to the Nigerian project.

He stressed that democracy should not be reduced to elections alone but must be reflected in everyday values such as accountability, transparency, tolerance, justice, respect for the rule of law, and responsible leadership.

Expressing confidence in the nation’s future, Fubara encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united. He said collective commitment to peace, dialogue, and national development would help build a stronger and more prosperous country where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
