The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have issued a stern warning to construction companies, contractors, and stakeholders to stop damaging fibre-optic cables during road construction and civil engineering activities.
According to a joint statement, fibre-optic infrastructure is crucial to Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting communication networks, emergency services, and government functions. The agencies stressed that frequent fibre cuts pose serious threats to national security, economic stability, and public safety.
The NCC and NSCDC cited the Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Order 2024, classifying telecommunication fibre infrastructure as critical national infrastructure. Offenders risk prosecution under laws like the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
The agencies urged stakeholders to comply with guidelines, including verifying fibre routes before construction and collaborating with NCC and NSCDC. They also called for immediate reporting of accidental fibre damage to minimize disruptions.
The public is encouraged to report fibre-optic infrastructure sabotage or damage to the nearest NSCDC office.
