Nigerians in Mozambique Detention: NIDCOM Seeks Clarification on Arrest Reasons

By Danjuma Amodu | March 13, 2026

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) is seeking official reasons for the detention of 42 Nigerians in Mozambique, as the country’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) denies detaining other nationals besides Nigerians. The Nigerian High Commission hasn’t been officially notified, and families are worried about the detainees’ conditions.

The commission demands the authorities either charge them to court or release them. The detainees, all legal residents in Mozambique, were allegedly beaten, had their belongings confiscated, and are in need of medical attention.

NIDCOM Chair, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the arrest as “disturbing” and “unacceptable,” suggesting possible xenophobia. She urged Mozambican authorities to either release the detainees or formally charge them in court.
