Ogoni Youths Embark on Civil Security Training Under HYPREP Initiative

By Danjuma Amodu| February 18, 2026

A new cohort of 500 Ogoni youths has begun training as Civil Security personnel at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area, River State.

The initiative, part of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), aims to create employment opportunities for 1,000 Ogoni youths, enhance community security, and protect critical public facilities, including HYPREP projects in Ogoni Land.

The Federal Government had previously approved an increase in the number of Civil Security Personnel from 500 to 1,000, underscoring its commitment to peacebuilding efforts in the region.

HYPREP’s initiatives also include Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Training for Ogoni Traditional Rulers and Community Leaders, fostering a peaceful and secure environment conducive to sustainable development and project delivery.

The project underscores the importance of a stable atmosphere in achieving development goals, aligning with the notion that peace and security are prerequisites for effective project implementation.

This initiative is part of HYPREP’s broader efforts to address the environmental and social impacts of hydrocarbon pollution in the Ogoni region, promoting sustainable development and community engagement.

The Ogoni region, known for its rich oil reserves, has faced environmental degradation and social tensions in the past. HYPREP’s efforts aim to address these challenges and promote peace, security, and development in the area. The training of Civil Security personnel is expected to enhance community security and protect critical infrastructure, supporting the region’s economic growth and development.

The initiative has been welcomed by local communities, who see it as a positive step towards addressing the region’s security challenges and promoting economic opportunities for Ogoni youths.
