The Vice-Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, has officially opened a newly constructed Students’ Relaxation Centre at the Faculty of Education, built by the Students’ Union Government (SUG).
The facility has been named after Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, in recognition of her contributions to the university.
The commissioning ceremony, held on 26 February 2026, was attended by principal officers, management members, staff, student leaders, and distinguished guests. It marks the first project to be commissioned by the Vice – Chancellor since assumption of office.
Professor Lawrence Achimugu, Dean of the Faculty of Education, described the occasion as historic and symbolic, highlighting the project’s representation of legacy, mentorship, and purposeful leadership.
Comrade Rilwan Abubakar Obaje, SUG President, stated that the centre promotes student welfare, providing a conducive environment for relaxation and academic interaction.

The facility, with a seating capacity of 60, addresses the shortage of relaxation spaces within the faculty. Obaje noted that the project demonstrates inclusive leadership, executed outside his faculty to benefit the entire student body.
Professor Usman commended the SUG for demonstrating vision and commitment, stating that the President had “written his name in gold”.
He emphasised the importance of mentorship, praising Professor Tenuche’s impactful interventions that strengthened the university community.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Sunday Adetunji Adegoke, expressed satisfaction with the project, attributing its success to transparent student union elections and effective leadership.
Rotr. Solomon Victor Orma-Ofo, Executive President of the Education Students Association of Nigeria (PAAU Chapter), commended the SUG leadership for initiating a landmark project, noting that the relaxation centre would provide students with a space to relax, refresh, study and strengthen academic engagement and other extra-curricular activities.

Professor Usman reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the university’s laws and guiding principles, describing the commissioning as a special privilege, particularly as it honoured a predecessor he described as a mentor.
The ceremony included the presentation of a student notebook honouring Professor Usman’s exemplary leadership and transformative leadership at PAAU.
The commissioning has been met with enthusiasm from students, who took to social media to express their appreciation.
