Senate Yields to Public Pressure, Passes Electoral Act Amendment Bill

By Danjuma Amodu | February 10, 2026

The Senate has passed a revised Electoral Act Amendment Bill, incorporating a provision for the electronic transmission of election results from polling units, following intense public pressure.

Under the new clause, Presiding Officers must electronically transmit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV) after completing, signing, and stamping Form EC8A, and obtaining countersignatures from candidates or their agents.

However, if electronic transmission fails due to communication challenges, physical Form EC8A will serve as the primary document for collation and declaration of results.

The development follows public scrutiny and protests ahead of the Senate’s emergency plenary session, which addressed concerns over the earlier bill that omitted mandatory electronic transmission.

The Electoral Act Amendment Bill aimed to improve Nigeria’s electoral process. The revised bill’s electronic transmission provision seeks to enhance transparency and credibility in elections, addressing concerns over result manipulation and ensuring timely announcement of results.
