President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as acting Inspector-General of Police, effective immediately, following Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation. The move comes amid Nigeria’s pressing security challenges, with Disu set to provide steady leadership to the Nigeria Police Force.
“In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said in a statement.
Disu, a seasoned officer born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, brings over three decades of experience to the role. He joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, serving in various capacities, including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He was promoted to Assistant Inspector-General of Police last year.
A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu previously headed the Intelligence Response Team, a position held by Abba Kyari. He led the first Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan in 2005 and commanded the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad from 2015 to 2021, branding his officers “The Good Guys” to promote professional policing.
Egbetokun’s tenure, which began in June 2023, was marked by controversy over his extended stay, sparking public criticism. The National Assembly later amended the Police Act to allow the IGP to serve a four-year term, securing Egbetokun’s position until 2027. Disu’s appointment ends Egbetokun’s tenure, with President Tinubu set to convene the Nigeria Police Council to formalise Disu’s position.
