The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, has praised the agency’s staff nationwide for their courage and dedication to protecting Nigeria’s environment despite limited resources and challenging conditions.
In his 2026 Workers’ Day message on Thursday, Prof. Barikor described NESREA personnel as the “police of the environment” who continue to deliver on the agency’s mandate through professionalism and sacrifice.
“My Dear Colleagues, today, as Nigeria joins the world to celebrate Workers’ Day, I salute all of you who give meaning to the mandate of the Agency,” Barikor said. “From Headquarters to Zonal Offices, State Field Offices, Operational Areas, and our laboratories, you have exhibited uncommon resolve to safeguard the Nigerian environment.”
He acknowledged the demanding nature of environmental enforcement. “Our job as the police of the environment is certainly not an easy one. Yet, with your professionalism, courage, and sacrifice, we have navigated difficult terrains and met the expectations of Nigerians, even in the midst of limited resources,” he said.
The DG thanked staff for “showing up every day with integrity and commitment,” and highlighted key achievements including the expansion of the Extended Producer Responsibility, EPR, Programme, enforcement of National Environmental Regulations, nationwide public sensitization campaigns, and efforts to maintain Nigeria’s biodiversity.
Reaffirming Management’s priorities, Prof. Barikor pledged continued focus on “staff welfare, improved conditions of service, and training opportunities.” He urged personnel to remain anchored to the agency’s core values of “Discipline, Dedication, and Due Diligence.”
“I wish you and your lovely families a happy Workers’ Day. God bless NESREA and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
The message comes as environmental regulators across the country mark May 1 amid increasing calls for better funding, equipment, and legal protection for field officers who often face hostility while enforcing environmental laws.
