TCN Inspects Abuja Independent Power Plant Project

By Henry Oseremen Ihimekpen | February 18, 2026

The Management of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has inspected the ongoing construction work at the Abuja Independent Power Plant Project Phase One in Gwagwalada, Abuja. Led by Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider (TSP), Engr. Dr. Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, the visit aimed to assess the project’s progress, generating capacity, commissioning timeline, and evacuation requirements for integration into the national grid.

The power plant, being constructed by Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), will be powered by gas supplied through the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Gas Pipeline (AKK). Phase One is expected to deliver 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid upon completion, scheduled for December 2026.

This project aligns with Nigeria’s goal to increase dispatchable, grid-connected power generation capacity to 8,500 MW by the end of 2026. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has commended the project, stating it will contribute significantly to improving supply reliability, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding regions.

NISO also expressed confidence that the full electricity value chain will be integrated into a unified Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platform, enhancing grid monitoring and system reliability.
