The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Delta State Chapter, and Executive Chairman of Okpe Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Isaiah Onoriode Esiovwa, has commended Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for what he described as remarkable democratic achievements and commitment to grassroots development.
In his statement at this year’s Democracy Day celebration, Hon. Esiovwa described June 12, 1993, as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the day represents the enduring values of people’s choice, accountability, constitutional order, and inclusive governance.
He honoured the sacrifices of the heroes of June 12, including Chief MKO Abiola and Kudirat Abiola, whose struggles, according to him, strengthened the nation’s democratic foundation.
The ALGON Delta Chairman said Governor Oborevwori’s administration, through the MORE Agenda, has demonstrated leadership qualities that align with the ideals of June 12 by prioritising transparency, equity, and service delivery.
Hon. Esiovwa highlighted key areas of progress under the administration, including economic reforms, improved Internally Generated Revenue, support for small and medium-scale businesses, infrastructure development, and initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between rural, riverine, and urban communities.
He noted that the administration’s focus on youth empowerment, job creation, social inclusion, and peaceful coexistence has further strengthened democratic participation and unity across the state.
According to him, the leadership style of Governor Oborevwori reflects the true meaning of democracy by ensuring that government policies and programmes impact citizens at the grassroots.
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership reflects the spirit of June 12: government of the people, for the people, and with the people. By anchoring governance on transparency, equitable development, and economic empowerment, he is delivering democracy where it matters most, at the doorstep of every ward.”

Hon. Esiovwa assured that ALGON Delta and all Local Government Chairmen in the state remain committed to supporting the governor’s policy direction by ensuring effective service delivery, accountability, and implementation of programmes at the council level.
He called on all stakeholders, including the legislature, judiciary, civil service, media, private sector, traditional institutions, women, youths, and students, to continue supporting Nigeria’s democratic growth.
The ALGON Chairman also expressed optimism that ongoing efforts towards strengthening local government autonomy would further enhance development and improve service delivery to the people.
He reaffirmed ALGON Delta’s commitment to the ideals of democracy, stressing that democracy can only be meaningful when its benefits are felt at the grassroots.
