The Plateau State Government has vowed to take decisive action against insecurity in the state, following a high-level State Security Council Meeting chaired by the Governor today.
The meeting was convened to review recent tragic incidents that claimed innocent lives in Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area and other parts of the state, including a mining incident in Wase and attacks in some communities.
In a statement, the Governor condemned the incidents, describing them as “unacceptable” and assured that his administration would take firm and proactive measures to prevent any recurrence.
He commended security agencies for their swift interventions, which helped prevent further escalation, and directed them to intensify surveillance and operational efforts, particularly in rural communities.
The Governor also extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones, saying “their pain is our pain” and warned against unauthorised road blockages, stating that “anyone who blocks a highway without authorization will not be tolerated”.
He emphasised that every life on the Plateau is sacred and that the government would not allow criminal elements to undermine peace, adding that security agencies are on the trail of perpetrators and will ensure they are brought to justice.
The Governor also warned against misinformation and exaggerated narratives on social media, saying Plateau roads are safe and its people are peace-loving, and called on citizens to foster tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and unity to overcome challenges.
The Governor’s statement also highlighted the importance of community leaders playing their part in safeguarding their communities, saying they will be held accountable for incidents occurring within their jurisdictions.
He emphasised that the state’s highways and access roads are public assets meant for all citizens, and that no grievance justifies taking the law into one’s hands.
The Governor’s comments come amidst efforts to restore peace and stability in Plateau State, which has experienced sporadic violence in recent times.
The State Security Council Meeting was attended by security agencies, community leaders, and government officials, who deliberated on ways to address the security challenges facing the state.
The Governor’s directive to security agencies to intensify surveillance and operational efforts is seen as a step towards curbing the spate of attacks and ensuring the safety of citizens.
The Plateau State Government has assured citizens of its commitment to protecting lives and property, and urged everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The government also appealed to the public to shun rumour-mongering and misinformation, saying it can exacerbate the situation and undermine efforts to restore peace.
