Wike Warns Makinde: ‘A Fight You Can’t Win, Don’t Start It’ Amidst PDP Turmoil

By Danjuma Amodu | March 24, 2026

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has criticized Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, over the ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike made the remarks at the National Executive Committee (NWC) meeting of the PDP faction chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

The PDP is grappling with internal strife following an appeal court judgement that nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025, which produced Kabiru Turaki as chairman. Party stakeholders have called for reconciliation to ensure the PDP can field candidates in the 2027 elections.

Makinde, aligned with Turaki’s faction, had stated that engaging with Wike’s camp means backing President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid. Wike responded, saying “A fight you can’t fight, don’t start it,” accusing Makinde of escalating tensions within the party despite lacking political leverage.

Mohammed assured the national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 will proceed as planned, despite alleged plots to halt it. He emphasized the party’s strength as a viable opposition and urged members to remain disciplined and united.

The crisis has raised concerns about the PDP’s chances in the 2027 elections, with some arguing that the party needs to present a united front to challenge the ruling APC.
