The 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 and approved the indefinite suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct.
The meeting, held in Abuja, was presided over by ALGON National President, Hon. Bello Lawal, and attended by members from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside past national presidents and members of the Board of Trustees.
In a communiqué issued at the end of deliberations, the Council unanimously endorsed President Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing what it described as improved fiscal capacity, autonomy and renewed relevance of local governments under his administration.
ALGON pledged continued support for the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that sustained leadership would further strengthen grassroots governance across the country.
The Council also approved the indefinite suspension of the Chairman of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State, Hon. Zakari Iliyasu, over allegations of impersonation, anti-association activities and abuse of constitutional provisions.
Similarly, the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State, Mr. Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, and the Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Mr. Abba Shehu Tambuwal, was suspended for their alleged roles in actions capable of causing disunity within the Association.
ALGON cautioned Ministries, Departments and Agencies, development partners and the general public against dealing with the affected officials, stressing that they no longer have the mandate to act on behalf of the Association.
The Council further passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the ALGON National President, Hon. Bello Lawal, commending his efforts in repositioning the Association through collaboration and strategic engagements.
ALGON reaffirmed its commitment to unity and warned against any attempts to destabilize the body, while calling on security agencies to take decisive action against individuals impersonating its officials.
