Okpo Forum Mourns Death of Prof. Francis Ojonugwa Onu

The Okpo Progressive and Community Development Forum is mourning the death of its member, Prof. Francis Ojonugwa Onu, who died on 7 May 2026.

In a statement issued by the Forum’s Board and Interim Committee, members said they received the news with “hearts weighed down by grief”.

“A life that brought light, warmth, and meaning to many has now gone quiet, leaving behind memories we will forever cherish and a space that can never truly be filled,” the statement read.

Until his death, Prof. Onu was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Industrial and Development Sociology.

Born and raised in Ofanwa, Prof. Onu attended Qua Iboe Church Primary School, Okpo, in Kogi State, before proceeding to Emmanuel Secondary School, Ugbokolo, in Benue State. He completed his A-level studies at the School of Basic Studies, Makurdi, also in Benue State.

He earned a BSc in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, an MSc from the University of Jos, and a PhD from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Prof. Onu and his parents were members of the Qua Iboe Church, now the United Evangelical Church, Okpo. He is survived by his wife, Dr Mrs Deborah Ada Onu.

The Forum called on members and well-wishers to honour his memory through prayer, unity and support for his family.

“In this difficult moment, let us come together in prayer and reflection and ask the Almighty to grant him eternal rest, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into everlasting peace. May God also strengthen, comfort, and uphold every member of the Onu family through this trying time,” the statement said.

Burial arrangements will be announced following consultation with the family.
