At 16, Osasere Okundaye Becomes Nigeria’s Youngest-Ever Chartered Accountant

By Danjuma Amodu

Osasere Okundaye, 16, has made history as the youngest Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant, after passing all examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the feat as “a shining example of the limitless potential of Nigerian youth” and a testament to hard work, discipline and resilience.

In a statement issued on Monday, Olawande said Okundaye’s achievement should inspire other young Nigerians to stay focused and believe in their capacity to excel. He also acknowledged the role of her parents, teachers and mentors, noting that their support and sacrifices were critical to the milestone.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s commitment to creating opportunities that allow young people to explore and maximize their potential.

Before Okundaye’s breakthrough, the national record was held by Jonathan Adewale, who qualified as a chartered accountant at 17 in 2022. His record stood for three years as the youngest in Nigeria’s ICAN history.

ICAN is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most demanding professional qualifications, typically requiring several years of study, rigorous examinations and practical experience before certification. Okundaye’s qualification at 16 has therefore drawn widespread attention, with many describing it as exceptional and a motivation for young Nigerians pursuing professional excellence.
