The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, has resolved to strengthen institutional capacity and promote unity among its members as part of efforts to improve grassroots governance and service delivery across the country.
The resolutions were reached at the association’s 2026 General Assembly in Abuja, where the Deputy National President of ALGON, Honourable Ikenna Toni Adikibe, commended Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for attending the gathering as Special Guest of Honour.
Honourable Adikibe, who is also Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State, said the governor’s presence had renewed confidence in local government administration and underscored the importance of strengthening the third tier of government.

He called for sustained commitment to local government autonomy, institutional development and financial viability to enable councils to deliver meaningful benefits to residents.
Honourable Adikibe also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, through Governor Uzodimma, for the support extended to local government administration, pledging ALGON’s commitment to implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda across the 774 local government areas.
The assembly, attended by council chairmen, vice chairmen, councillors and other stakeholders, approved the reconstitution of the association’s Board of Trustees, capacity-building initiatives and the redesignation of its administrative head from Secretary-General to Director-General.
Members also approved the annual budgets, adopted reports of principal officers and passed proposed constitutional amendments by an absolute majority.
The gathering further recorded the return of former factional promoter, Honourable Abubakar Mohammed, in what was described as a step towards reconciliation and unity within the association.
Honourable Adikibe expressed optimism that the resolutions would reposition ALGON for greater institutional effectiveness, constitutional compliance and improved service delivery at the grassroots.
