Atletico Madrid Beat Fenerbahce to Sign Ademola Lookman

By Danjuma Amodu | February 1, 2026

Atletico Madrid has emerged victorious in the race to sign Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, beating Fenerbahce to the punch. The Spanish club has agreed to pay €40 million (€35 million fixed fee + €5 million in add-ons) to Atalanta for the 28-year-old attacker’s services.

Lookman has chosen Atletico Madrid over Fenerbahce, reportedly convinced by manager Diego Simeone’s vision for the team. The forward is set to travel to Spain for medical tests and contract signing, marking a significant boost to Atletico Madrid’s attacking lineup.

The Nigerian forward had a successful AFCON 2025 with Nigeria, scoring three goals and providing four assists, which sparked interest from top clubs like Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce.

Reports suggest Lookman initially wanted to leave Atalanta last summer, with Inter Milan being his preferred destination. However, Atalanta blocked the move, refusing to sell to a Serie A rival for less than €50 million.

This led to Lookman seeking a new challenge, and he eventually agreed to join Fenerbahce, but the deal stalled over payment terms.

Atletico Madrid then stepped in, matching Fenerbahce’s €40 million offer, and Lookman opted to join the Spanish club. He is expected to sign a four-year deal worth €7 million per season.

The deal is a testament to Atletico Madrid’s determination and strategic approach, outmanoeuvring Fenerbahce in the final hours of the transfer window.

Lookman’s arrival is expected to strengthen the team’s chances in La Liga and European Club competitions.
