By Danjuma Amodu | February 19, 2026

In a bid to curb vandalism and enhance security, the Federal Government has taken over NNPCL funded road projects, injecting ₦127 billion to accelerate completion and expand CCTV surveillance on key bridges and highways.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe, Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, emphasized that project allocation is based on national development needs, not regional interests. “We are committed to transparency and accountability,” he said, urging Nigerians to support national unity and protect public assets.

The move is part of a broader effort to address the estimated ₦16.9 trillion backlog in federal road and bridge projects, with the government inheriting 6,604 ongoing initiatives nationwide. Sen. Umahi warned that ₦7 trillion is needed to complete NNPCL funded projects, critical to boosting economic growth and connectivity.

The Minister reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to prioritize infrastructure development, ensuring quality standards are met.

Mr. Rafiu Adeladan, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, echoed the call for transparency, urging the public and media to verify facts and provide constructive feedback. “We value the role of the press in promoting accountability and ensuring that our efforts translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians,” he said.

Adeladan thanked stakeholders for their continued support, emphasizing that the ministry would work tirelessly to deliver quality infrastructure and improve the nation’s road network. He reiterated the government’s commitment to collaboration with state governments and private sector partners to drive sustainable development and enhance national security.

The development marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to infrastructure management, with a focus on leveraging technology and partnerships to drive progress.
