Nigeria and Meta Join Forces to Curb Digital Misinformation

By Danjuma Amodu | 21 January 2026

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, met in Abuja with Meta’s senior leadership; Kevin Martin, Senior Vice President for Global Policy, and Kojo Boakye, Vice President for Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East and Turkey to explore a deeper, mutually beneficial partnership.

The talks centred on reinforcing Nigeria‑Meta relations, advancing responsible digital governance, bolstering fact‑checking mechanisms and fostering constructive online discourse across the country.

Ambassador Tuggar stressed that Nigeria remains committed to collaborating with global technology firms so that digital platforms can play a positive role in national development, democratic resilience and regional stability.

He highlighted the need for transparent content‑moderation, robust data‑protection standards and joint efforts to counter misinformation, especially as Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections.

Meta responded by affirming its readiness to support initiatives that enhance information integrity and responsible digital engagement, and to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on programmes that promote media literacy, local‑language tools and capacity‑building for Nigerian fact‑checkers.

The company pointed to its existing collaborations with Nigerian organisations such as FactCheckAfrica and MyAIFactChecker, which have already contributed linguistic resources and AI‑driven verification tools to the local ecosystem.

Both parties agreed to establish a working group that will map out concrete actions, from technical assistance on content‑moderation algorithms to joint public‑awareness campaigns, with the aim of creating a safer, more inclusive digital space for all Nigerians.
