The Kogi East Senatorial Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Ameh, has condemned the reported attack and obstruction of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.
Mr. Ameh described the incident as unacceptable and a threat to democratic values, stating that no citizen should be harassed, intimidated, or obstructed from exercising their constitutional rights.
He alleged that the roadblock and intimidation were carried out by individuals who may have the backing of those in positions of authority.
The NDC senatorial candidate stressed that Nigeria’s public roads belong to all citizens and should not be used to create fear, inconvenience, or political tension.
Mr. Ameh cited Sections 40 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee citizens’ rights to freedom of association and freedom of movement across the country.
He therefore called on the Benue State Government to publicly condemn the incident and ensure that Mr. Obi’s visit to the state proceeds without further interference.
Mr. Ameh also urged the relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice, irrespective of political affiliation.
He said Nigerians must continue to uphold peace, accountability, constitutional rights, and the rule of law, stressing that Benue State deserves leadership that protects its people and respects their fundamental freedoms.
