Retired DIG Gumel Says Security Is Collective Responsibility, Backs State Police

By Hassan Hussain

A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, has said security in Nigeria is a collective responsibility and called on citizens to actively join the fight against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.

DIG Gumel, who is Secretary of Project 774 Network for Asiwaju, made the call in Abuja ahead of a national sensitisation conference scheduled for July 31, 2026 at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel. The event is themed: “Our Security, Our Duty: Citizens Standing with Our Troops to End Terrorism, Banditry and Kidnapping.”

The retired police chief said criminal activities are largely concentrated at the grassroots, particularly in local government areas, and therefore require community-driven solutions. He noted that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shown commitment to tackling insecurity through reforms, including local government financial autonomy. He added that the reform should enable councils to take a more active role in protecting their communities.

“Traditional rulers, religious leaders, community volunteers and residents have vital knowledge of their environments and must work closely with security agencies to identify and isolate criminal elements,” Gumel said. “Security should not be politicised.”

DIG Gumel commended the sacrifices of the military, police and other security agencies in combating insecurity. He urged Nigerians to support security personnel rather than undermine their efforts.

Speaking on the proposed establishment of state police, Gumel expressed strong support, saying decentralised policing would improve community security and intelligence gathering. He acknowledged concerns about possible abuse but said such issues could be addressed through constitutional amendments during implementation.

According to him, Project 774 Network for Asiwaju is organising the conference to mobilise citizens for greater participation in national security. He said the event will bring together traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical ways to strengthen community involvement. The conference will conclude with a citizens’ declaration of commitment to support security agencies and work collectively to end insecurity in Nigeria.
