Tinubu’s Gas Transition Initiative Gains Momentum As Expert, ALGON Commend Rollout

By Hassan Hussain | April 21, 2024

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative to transition households from kerosene, firewood, and charcoal to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is gaining momentum, with a development expert and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) commending the rollout.

Distinguished Senator Alphonsus Ubanesse, a development expert and lead consultant to ALGON, described LPG as a cleaner, healthier, and more efficient alternative. He noted that its adoption would significantly reduce household emissions, protect users from harmful smoke, preserve forest resources, and provide a more economical and convenient cooking option for families.

Reacting to collaborative efforts between ALGON and the Technical Working Group under his leadership, Senator Ubanesse also lauded the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, for his commitment to driving the Federal Government’s energy transition policy. He observed that the ministry’s proactive support played a key role in the successful launch of the LPG Energy Empowerment Programme.

According to him, the programme is designed to ensure access to safe, affordable, and low-emission energy, particularly for women, youths, and children, while promoting a cleaner environment.

Senator Ubanesse further expressed appreciation to the ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal, for his leadership and dedication to grassroots development. He revealed that, following the successful pilot rollout in Imo State, the Technical Working Group would intensify collaboration with ALGON and the Federal Government to expand awareness campaigns, strengthen mass mobilisation, and ensure targeted distribution of LPG resources to vulnerable communities across the 774 Local Government Areas and Area Councils nationwide.
