The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) has trained tutors of Health Information Management institutions on the District Health Information System II (DHIS2) to strengthen data-driven decision-making in the country’s healthcare system.
The Registrar of the Board, Alhaji Babagana Mustapha, disclosed this in Abuja at a two-day workshop on capacity building and continuous training on DHIS2 for tutors of Health Information Management training institutions in Nigeria.
The workshop, themed “Capacity Building Training on District Health Information System II (DHIS2) for HIM Tutors,” brought together educators to enhance their knowledge and skills in digital health data management.
Alhaji Mustapha described the training as timely and strategic, noting that in today’s data-driven healthcare environment, the ability to generate, manage, analyse, and utilise accurate health information is fundamental to effective decision-making and improved health outcomes.i
He explained that DHIS2 has become a vital tool in Nigeria’s health information ecosystem, supporting data management across primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare levels.
The Registrar reminded participants that, as tutors, they play a central role in shaping the next generation of Health Information Management professionals, stressing that continuous training on evolving systems such as DHIS2 is essential.
According to him, the workshop reflects the Board’s commitment to promoting continuous professional development, strengthening the quality of training in institutions, aligning education with national health priorities, and advancing digital transformation in the sector.
Alhaji Mustapha urged participants to actively engage in the sessions, collaborate with facilitators, and apply the knowledge gained to improve teaching methods and students’ competence.
He also commended the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, partners, facilitators, and organisers for their support in making the programme a success.
The Registrar expressed optimism that outcomes from the training would enhance data quality, improve health system performance, and boost service delivery across the country.
The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria regulates the training and practice of health information management professionals. DHIS2 is an open-source, web-based health management information system platform used in over 70 countries to collect, validate, analyse, and present aggregate and patient-based statistical data. Nigeria adopted DHIS2 as its national health management information system to harmonise data reporting and support evidence-based planning at all levels of care.
