Nigeria Takes Significant Steps in HIV Prevention with Arrival of Long-Acting Injectable PrEP

By Danjuma Amodu | February 11, 2027

Nigeria has taken a significant step in its fight against HIV with the introduction of Long-Acting Injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) PrEP, a new option in HIV prevention.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the arrival of the injectable, which provides sustained protection for people at risk of HIV and helps improve adherence to prevention, in a post via a statement on the Ministry’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle today.

The introduction of LEN PrEP is part of the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP), aimed at expanding prevention choices and strengthening Nigeria’s response to HIV.

This development marks another important step in Nigeria’s journey toward ending HIV as a public health threat.

The statement said the Ministry’s efforts are expected to improve HIV prevention and treatment outcomes, ultimately contributing to the global goal of ending the HIV epidemic.

The introduction of LEN PrEP is a significant addition to Nigeria’s HIV prevention toolkit, offering individuals at risk of HIV a more convenient and effective way to protect themselves.

LEN PrEP is a pre-exposure prophylaxis that provides sustained protection against HIV, and its long-acting nature can improve adherence to prevention regimens.

This innovation is expected to enhance Nigeria’s HIV prevention landscape, providing more options for individuals to protect themselves and reduce the spread of the virus.
