The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has been recognized for its efforts in reimagining science to address environmental challenges.

Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, Project Coordinator of HYPREP, received an Award of Excellence in Hydrocarbon Remediation from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.

The award was presented at the Faculty’s 7th Annual Conference 2026, themed ‘Science Re-Imagined: Leveraging Technology & Innovation for a Sustainable Future’. Prof. Zabbey delivered a keynote lecture, highlighting HYPREP’s projects such as Mangrove Restoration, Shoreline Remediation, and Land Remediation.

“HYPREP is applying indigenous knowledge with science to restore mangroves, using growcoons biodegradable bags and indigenous microbes to formulate biofertilizer,” Prof. Zabbey said.

He emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating that science is reimagined when domesticated through training non-scientists to collect scientific data.

The Project Coordinator stressed the need for eco-friendly studies, inclusivity, innovation, and community-driven science-based environmental monitoring. “Our clarion call is to re-imagine science, undertaking innovative, interdisciplinary and solution-oriented research for development, creating knowledge products towards achieving environmental sustainability,” he said.

Prof. Okechuku Onuchuku, Acting Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, commended the Faculty for organizing the conference. “This conference is timely, and we’re proud to host it,” he said.

Mr. Roland Ngbor, Head of Administration, also received an Award for Excellence in Administration.
